QCI’s client, an award-winning private hospital are looking to recruit a Clinical Coding Lead / Auditor (CCS Approved Auditor status is essential) to join their team on a full-time permanent basis. This is a hybrid role consisting of four days working from home with one day in the office per week. Our client is open to the idea of 30 hours per week if preferred. The post holder will report directly to the Head of Finance and will be responsible for leading the clinical coding team for the hospital, ensuring all areas of the clinical coding function are effective operationally.
Duties
- To support the Head of Finance in managing the Clinical Coding function to ensure accurate coding of NHS and private activity in a timely basis.
- Line management for the Clinical Coding team of two, including the recruitment, sickness monitoring, annual leave, and disciplinary actions of staff.
- To develop and support the Clinical Coding team, including providing training and upskilling, for the team to feel supported.
- Lead on annual Clinical Coding audits and work as the second auditor to assist with the audits, under the supervision of the hospital’s approved independent Clinical Coding Auditor.
- Undertake monthly coding checks and Clinical Coding Audits, analysing coded data, writing audit reports, and making recommendations to make improvements.
- Engage with consultants, clinical staff and support services and deal with any technical coding queries that may arise. This will involve helping to present at meetings with clinicians, as and when required.
- Support Business Intelligence with PROMs and PHIN submissions for coded data for private and NHS coded activity.
- To enter coded clinical data onto the hospital’s encoder (3M Medicode) ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness at all times as failure to code episodes accurately will have a direct impact on the hospital’s income.
- Where possible, routinely code circa 40 episodes per day on average, although the role may require you to pivot and thus quality over quantity is key.

Essential Criteria
- Approved Clinical Coding Auditor, completed Clinical Coding Auditor’s programme.
- UK Nationally Accredited Clinical Coder Qualification (NCCQ).
- Experience in leading a small team within the clinical coding function.
- Experience in the conduct of clinical coding audits.
- Experience of helping to develop team members and seeking to improve services.
- A good understanding of the relevance of Clinical Coding in the context of HRGs and the Payment by Results initiative.
- Experience of ‘front end’ and ‘back end’ use of Clinical Coding Encoder software and hospital Patient Administration Systems.
- In depth knowledge of ICD10 & OPCS4 classifications & their associated National Standards.
- Comfortable and experienced with working with different stakeholders.
- A positive attitude and forward thinking.
- Highly adaptable and ability to problem-solve.
